Vancouver to Calgary

So I drove out last Saturday. Everyone that heard I was driving was scared, tried to stop me, gave me a lot of advice. And the advice was good, unless it was ’stay here’.
I left early Sat morning nervous about the whole trip, and the roads were perfect! Took the long way on the old Hwy 1 route to Kamloops, perfectly dry roads.
Even though the roads were great there was still a horrible accident where someone died. :( There was a large truck following me for a while west of Revelstoke. I got a little ahead of him, and then never saw him again. We had to stop for about 10 minutes for some road maintenance and a smaller car pulled up behind me, a girl got out and came running up to see if I had any cell phone reception.
Apparently that truck behind me sandwiched a car between him and another truck, and two more cars were hit. I think a driver of one of the cars died instantly, she said that it was pretty obvious. Her boyfriend even pulled someone out of a burning car! The truck driver had called for help, but told them to rush ahead and get help.
About 5-10 minutes later a rescue vehicle passed, and then an ambulance, fire rescue, and a helicopter. I think there was someone on the scene to help within 10-15 minutes.
I was a little nervous after that and drove a little slower. To think it happened right behind me and I never knew. If I had left just a little earlier that morning I would have been the one pulling the guy out of the burning car.
Yikes.
The rest of the trip was uneventful, Rogers Pass was perfect, and other than a snowstorm from Lake Louise to Banff it was smooth sailing.
One lesson to take away is to be careful, even if the roads are perfect. I think that the accident happened because a car was trying to pass one of the trucks and got clipped by the truck behind me.
