Stranger than Fiction

Now this is a good movie. Wait, I don’t know if you heard me, this is a good movie… If you don’t like Will Ferrell, or the types of movies he’s been in before, don’t let that stop you from seeing this one. This movie is a perfect example of why I like Science Fiction.
Science Fiction you ask? What most people normally think of when they think of Science Fiction is in fact more like Space Opera. You could probably describe this movie with the broader term Speculative Fiction.
One of the reasons I love buying a collection of Sci-Fi short stories is because they most often include stories like this, stories that deal with everyday people in everyday situations, with a little fantasy twist to it. For example, in the movie, Harold Crick (Will Ferrell) suddenly starts to hear a woman’s voice narrating his life. He eventually finds out he is the main character in a novel being written about his life, and that it is a tragedy. How he deals with that is what the movie is about.
So go rent the movie, it is a great story, but don’t go in expecting a laugh-fest like Ferrell’s previous movies. (Though there are some laugh-out-loud moments) If you’ve read the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy ‘trilogy of five’ you may find the narration similar, plus a surprise bit about a bulldozer and Harold’s house may get you laughing.
